Cinderella Debut
Today marks the anniversary of Disney's Cinderella opening nation wide in theaters. This would be Walt Disney's sixth animation film.
I'm a BIG Disney fan. I grew up with Disney. My family would make an annual pilgrimage to Disney. It's such a marvelous and magical place. It takes you out of your everyday life and embraces you into a world full of magic, mystery, laughter, fun and creativity.
I love Cinderella. I love the talking mice, especially Gus Gus (cute little chubby mouse) and the Fairy Godmother. The story is so beautiful and told lovingly.
Originally the Brothers Grimm version was chosen because of the similarities to Snow White. However the immediate source was Charles Perrault's French version, which tells the story of a young girl whose father dies leaving her at the mercy of her wicked stepmother and two selfish stepsisters.
Taking this foundation Disney made a few modification. Cinderella gets help from a few friends, musical animals ones in fact, and magical help from her Fairy Godmother who helps her escape servitude prison and win the heart of Prince Charming. Along with the trademark happy ending that Disney has perfected they also created these beautiful endearing songs that one can't help but sing a long. "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" and Oscar nominated "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo" are true classics that any age can enjoy.
It took 6 years to make Cinderella and its as charming then as it is now. This film became one of the best-loved films for Disney and one of the highest grossing features of 1950. Disney Studios has periodically re-releases this treasure introducing new generations to the magic of Disney.
Go out and make friends with a couple of dressed mice or lose your shoe at a royal ball and celebrate the 62nd anniversary of a classic.
