One of my dream travel destination is London. I have always been intrigued and it's on my top 5 places to visit. The desire to see London is now even more compounded because of the summer Olympics. I love the Olympics! Summer or winter it doesn't matter. It's a moment in time where the entire world comes together to celebrate the tenacity, strength, creativity and individuality of the human race. A time of camaraderie and fellowship. How I long to be in this beautiful city and live the experience of the games.
There is so much joy and excitement surrounding the Olympics. Countries have sent off their strongest and their most talented athletes to compete and bring back that coveted Olympic medal. Years of intense training, sweat and tears have brought them to this moment. This is what they have worked for. This opportunity to represent their nation in honor, pride and respect. Each athlete has their own story. Their own reason and dreams for being here. Each with an aspiration and in the process becoming an inspiration.
My favorite sports are gymnastics and soccer. When I was about 6 or 7 I saw the TV movie "Nadia". It was the true story of a young girl with the gift of gymnastics who scored the first ever Olympic perfect 10. Since then I have been obsessed with gymnastics and with Nadia Comaneci. I love the art of the sport and the impressive strength and flexibility these girls have. It's unbelievable! I could watch it for hours. Soccer is just as fun to watch. I know that soccer is not a big deal in the states but everywhere else it's important and a big deal. Fights have broken out during games and it wasn't on the field. Soccer fans are the most passionate and craziest. I enjoy the men's version of each sport but I must say that the women kick the men's butts, especially in soccer! Sorry boys.
I'm so jazzed about the opening ceremony tonight! Looking forward to seeing what they come up with. The challenge in any Olympic games is the schedule. With such a vast time difference I'm glad I have a Tivo, so I'm sure not to miss any excitement. London 2012 WooHoo!
To be completely honest I did not want to come back to work. I just wasn't ready. The prior school year was ridiculously stressful for various reasons and I just didn't feel motivated to start. I didn't know if I could face another stressful year. I loved my students, there were just a few that drained me on a daily basis. I wasn't optimist about my classroom dynamics and was bracing myself for the worst. The past has a way of cautioning you for the future. Sometimes that's good while other times, as in my case, just rob you of your joy. Orientation week went as usually. Meetings, work in class, meetings, work in class, lunch and so on. On Back to School Night I was a bit nervous but not like normal. I was an eerie calm, almost apathetic. I had already assumed the worst and was ready to face my fate. I meet the kids and the parents and it was all good. I'm thinking, this means nothing crazy is just around the corner. First day of school. Normally for k...
Today during devotions I read Judges 3:31. One verse dedicated to a man named Shamgar. "After him came Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad; and he also saved Israel."(Judges 3:31) Twenty-two words telling it straight of how God used Shamgar. This is the first time I read or focused on this verse. I began to wonder who is Shamgar. What can I learn from this individual and what is a an oxgoad? So I did a little digging. First let's take a quick look at the book of Judges. Basically the book of Judges accounts the various activities of Judges who delivered and had authority in Israel after the death of Joshua. Now Joshua had defeated the main forces of the opposition and led Israel into Canaan and divided the lands to the various tribes. Before his death he warned Israel to not mix or intermarry with the local people. Stay away from their foreign gods and keep your eye on the true God. But Israel disobeyed. Which began a p...
I'm a big Star Trek fan. I've enjoyed almost ever incarnation of this Sci-Fi giant. Recently my husband and I have been watching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. One of the enemies for this particular series are the Jem'Hadar. These creatures are genetically engineered for battle and controlled through a drug called ketracel-white; which they require to function properly. Their mantra is "Obedience brings Victory. And Victory is Life." Every time they say this, I cringe. They are following orders from people who don't care for them and whose only goal is their own survival. I always felt it was such a terrible mantra. But today I had a revelation. During today's sermon, my pastor was going over John 10, The Good Shepherd. One of his points was how do we ensure that we can hear our Good Shepherd's (Jesus) voice. We need to read His word, meditate in His word, memorize His word and obey His word. Through obeying His word & voice we find life....
