Day 2- Good Eats in Maui
Started off the day with my feet in the ocean. Must start day like this everyday, so soothing.
Looking to have a Hawaiian breakfast we visited Aloha Mixed Plate. A lay back cafe where the tables & chairs are plastic, the water is served in paper cups and each table has a view of the beach. This humble establishment knows its food! We split three dishes, Loco moco with kalua pork fried rice, kalua pork hash with poached eggs, & paniolo (hawaiian french toast)with coconut syrup. It was all delicious and filling!
Following such a hearty meal we took a tour of Maui Tropical Plantation. They grow mangos, pineapples, bananas, taro, coffee, sugar cane and coconuts. It was very interesting to see each in its growing environment. Especially the pineapple, close to the ground with pointy leaves surrounding it. We got to get off the tour train and explore some lavender bushes and rub it against our fingers to release the essential oils, mmm therapeutic. We also learned how to husk a coconut seed, get the water out of the coconut and open it. Come to find out that no one seed looks alike, each is different, that's amazing! If I come across a coconut I'm ready all I need is a pickaxe head, a screwdriver and a heavy rock, it's doable : ). The demonstration was very impressive and the coconut water refreshing!
Next we headed down to Lahaina downtown to sightsee and shop. Many nice shops for everyone, budget wise and taste wise. In and out of stores with the rising heat deserved a cool down, so we sought out Local Boy Shaved Ice. The ice mound was huge! It took awhile but I got through it. Worth every icy bite!
This day of food needed to end with a feast. The Royal Lahaina Luau was the ticket. An all you can eat buffet of Hawaiian treats, poi included. I'm glad I tried poi even if it's to find out that it's bland and gummy, I think salt & pepper might help that dish. But the rest of the meal was good. The main event was the Show. Great hula dances and a fire show. All beautiful told stories. That's one thing I've always loved about Hula, each movement is telling part of the story. Unfortunately my phone, which is my camera on this trip, can't take proper night pictures so no Kodak moments just fuzzy people. Despite that it was a wonderful memory!
Aloha!
