Steak Sandwich, Steak Sandwich Where Art Thou
A few years back San Francisco lost Palace Steak House which in my opinion was one of the best steakhouses in the city. You got good food for a very reasonable price. My family had been going there for years. It was our family's steakhouse. But sadly the owners retired and they had to close their doors. Since then we(my brothers & I) have been in search of the perfect steak sandwich like the one we grew up with. But to no avail. It was quite depressing. The sandwich was so specific. It was made with a very special flat french garlic bread that is difficult to replicate even at home. The bread is them slather with mayo and in between they place a perfectly cooked steak. That's it. No fuss just simple but GOOD. Along side you would get a salad and a baked potato for $8-$10. So you can see why we were in search for a replacement.
About a month ago there was a glimmer of hope. We heard that Palace Steak House was being reopened. They we're keeping the same name and it would have a similar menu. So my brothers went to check it out. It turned out that the NY steak was still on the menu but the steak sandwich was not. They now served pizza and Middle Eastern cuisine. I enjoy those foods but you can't serve them and call yourself a steakhouse. They had the steak and they said it was okay, but they wouldn't go back. We began our search again.
There had always been two steakhouses with similar menus. The one on Cesar Chavez Avenue, which was our family steakhouse and the other on Geneva Avenue & Mission Street, which was the black sheep. I had went there once before and never returned. The restaurant was questionable. It was gloomy and sticky. The salad had browning lettuce and the steak sandwich was horrible. No crunch in the bread and it was just a greasy mess. Vowed never to step into this place again .
Well tonight I broke my vow. I went there with my parents to see if it had improved or if it was still as bad as we remembered it. Parking is non exist by the restaurant so we had to park a block away. Not a big deal, after a steak meal walking is go for you. The outside still looked run down, it didn't look promising. But when we stepped inside it was as if we were in a different place. It had been fixed up and cleaned. It looked so pretty. It was completely different. There was hope that the food had also upgraded. They only thing that hadn't change was the CASH ONLY sign. It's a good thing we had cash. My mom and I ordered the steak sandwich while my dad order the NY steak. Our meals came with a salad and a baked potato. The price for my steak sandwich with tax was $9.84. A great deal! The salad was so big. Piles of lettuce, carrots, beets, cucumber and tomato with your choice of dressing. It was fresh and yummy. Salad was good, check. The baked potato was simply served, plain with a side of melted butter. It was fluffy and cooked well. Potato good, check. Now the moment of truth, the steak sandwich. It looked similar. The bread was a little different but looked good. First bite. My taste buds were singing! The steak was a little fatty but that can be forgiven. Geneva Steak House is our new place! Our search for our long lost sandwich had ended.
