More Beautiful You
Beauty has always been a big part of our culture. It has been an obsession for generations. Each generation having their own definition. For one to find the definition our present generation has chosen, one only look at a magazine cover. Size 0 models whose pictures have been altered to mimic perfection. These images are being ingrained into the minds of our young girls. They think that if they don't look like that then they're ugly, causing them to try to live up to a fantasy. It breaks my heart that these girls are growing with low self esteem and feel so defeated.
It's hard to think that these images are not normal. Everywhere you see an advertisement it pictures someone's airbrushed body. I know what it is to feel ugly. I didn't grow up having a size 0 body, far from it. Once I became a teenager I started to skip meals and start telling myself that I wasn't worth it. There were times I would cry myself to sleep because all the other girls where thin, pretty and popular. It's hard living a life where you are looked down upon because of your appearance. I struggled for years, even now when my guard is down I find myself telling lies to myself. "You're fat! You're ugly! You're not worth much!" Those are Satan's lies. This is a battle that can be won. These images will always be there, they're not going away. But there is something even more powerful that will never disappear. God's word.
Psalm 139 is a beautiful passage.
"O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made."(v.1-4,13-14)
God knows us intimately. He knows our needs, thoughts and desires. These are the thoughts that need to run through our minds and hearts. Not the lies that Satan tries to give us.
You are a child of God. You are loved. You are wanted. You are a Jesus Girl. We need to fill our girls'minds and our minds with these truths.
Jonny Diaz, a christian artist,wrote a song named "More Beautiful You." The first verses go like this:
Little girl fourteen flipping through a magazine
Says she wants to look that way
But her hair isn't straight, her body isn't fake
And she's always felt overweight
Well, little girl fourteen I wish that you could see
That beauty is within your heart
And you were made with such care, your skin, your body and your hair
Are perfect just the way they are
The girl in the verse is 14 but this is true from little girl to grown women.
The chorus says:
There could never be a more beautiful you
Don't buy the lies, disguises and hoops, they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you
It such a beautiful song. It later talks about how God can change those thoughts and build you strong in Him. We need to draw close to our Creator and seek His purpose in our lives. Seeing ourselves as He sees us.
It's time to take back our girls beauty and let me know that they are fearfully and wonderfully made!!
