Questioning- "Pray For Obama" - Psalm 109:8

I recently learned about a bumper sticker that states "Pray For Obama" Psalm 109:8.

Well I looked up the verse and it says, "May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership." Now when I first read this I laughed. I thought it was cheeky and funny. Then I decided to read this verse in context. After I read the entire passage I felt awful. The rest of the passage reads this way. Here are a few verses:

9 May his children be fatherless
and his wife a widow.
10 May his children be wandering beggars;
may they be driven[a] from their ruined homes.
11 May a creditor seize all he has;
may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.
12 May no one extend kindness to him
or take pity on his fatherless children.
13 May his descendants be cut off,
their names blotted out from the next generation.
14 May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD;
may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
15 May their sins always remain before the LORD,
that he may blot out their name from the earth

It's pretty brutal, isn't it. As I read through the rest of the passage I began to ask why would people who say their Christian be proud to make this statement. I understand that his beliefs and values are not the same but he is our President. Regardless of our opinion of him and the job he is doing (this is not about being Republican or Democrat because there are faults in both parties), we are told by God through His Word to pray for our leaders in government. And not only that but the Word says in Romans 13:1 that "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." God is sovereign. He "sets up kings (in our case Presidents) and deposes them."(Daniel 2:21) God knows what He is doing. As children of God we must behave accordingly.

If our government leaders take a path that is against the Word of God then we must speak up and take a stand! But in regards to Psalm 109:8 we are only cementing the belief that Christians are full of judgment and condemnation. When that's not the case! Christians are called to be Christ-like. And making a statement like that reflects the opposite.

We get upset when the world takes the Bible and takes verses out of context to fulfill their agenda. We are outraged and call ourselves persecuted. (Which we are.) Yet in this case some Christian are doing the same thing. Verse 8 seems harmless but in context it's a psalm of judgment and fury. I don't believe that's applicable to the President. I am not personally happy with how all is being handle in the White House(and not just in this Presidents' term)
but I don't think swords need to be thrown.

What we are called to do is PRAY! Pray for ALL OUR LEADERS! Because they all have a hand in how our government is flowing. It is not a sole persons' fault. The blame falls on many. "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior,"(1 Timothy 2:1-3)

I challenge you - Let's TRULY PRAY for our President, as God tells us too.

I heard part of Oprah's last interview with our president. He and his wife both say that they pray daily and to the same God as we do as far as I know. I will continue to pray that God will speak to and guide Obama and our nation back to the path of righteousness.
