Good Friday
What is Good Friday? For some it's just another Friday. For others it's a Holy day. What makes this day so different? Why do so many around the world celebrate?
This is the day we remember the death of Jesus Christ. Jesus wants us to remember this day and honor it. He showed us that by sharing the first communion with the disciples. "For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes." (1 Corinthians 11:23-26)
HE WANTS US TO REMEMBER.
This is the day He walked bearing a heavy cross through the cobbled streets of Jerusalem. His brow bleeding from the crown of thorns pressed into his scalp. His back stripped bare to the bone from the Roman lashings. His face almost indistinguishable from the ruthless beating. It's such a disturbing image, isn't it? Just picturing it makes me turn away. It's so painful to imagine. Yet it is fact that Jesus went through this suffering.
When I read through the events that preceded the crucifixion, I'm in awe of Jesus. He knew what was going to happen. He knew the pain He would suffer. He knew the cruelty He would face. Knowing all those things He continued on the path. It baffles me, that He would purposefully suffer through unbelievable pain because He love me.
He knew that I wouldn't always be faithful. He knew that I would disappoint Him. He knew all the stumbles and falls I would take through my lifetime and still He chose to save me.
But not only knowing my failures but that of the worlds and in that immediate present His disciples. He called Judas to be a disciple knowing that he would sell Him out for thirty pieces of silver. Peter denied Jesus three times because of fear. When He was arrested all the disciples ran away and hid. He was left alone. Yet His love for them and us did/does not fade.
Good Friday is a day of remembrance. Remembering the breaking of the bread and drinking of the cup. Remembering the wounds he received for us. Remembering His agonizing death so that we could live. REMEMBERING THAT HE CHOSE ME!
"But he was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."
Isaiah 53:5
